Abstract
Engineering an automation system requires information to move between electrical design and PLC engineering, although the tools involved often represent the same devices, networks and configuration information from different perspectives. The AutomationML Application Recommendation Automation Project Configuration (AR APC) addresses this challenge by defining a common, vendor-neutral representation for exchanging automation project configuration data.
This contribution presents AR APC from the perspective of Siemens and its industrial implementation in the TIA Portal engineering environment. It discusses how standardized AutomationML-based exchange can connect ECAD and PLC engineering, enable the reuse of existing hardware configurations and reduce redundant engineering across tool boundaries. The presentation also provides insights into the practical requirements that emerge when a standardized data model becomes part of established industrial engineering workflows.
The contribution therefore looks beyond the specification itself and illustrates how a concrete AutomationML application can evolve from a standardized exchange concept into an operational interface between engineering disciplines.
