Summary
Automating the engineering of automation systems has long been a goal. With the complexity of real production systems now manageable, the remaining obstacle is missing or incorrect information about the real system. The DIAMOND project showed that information logistics can address this, but their use for automating engineering steps had not been examined, in particular for the small and medium-sized companies that form the industrial core of German industry.
The paper presents a process model for designing an information logistics based on DIAMOND results and AutomationML, which can be used to realise automated design steps in production system engineering, and validates it on two application cases from medium-sized companies. The English-language follow-up is the ETFA 2026 paper Enabling SMEs to Exploit Automated Engineering by Realizing an Engineering Information Logistics.
